Aliyev: Garabagh settlement efforts fruitless
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has said all steps being taken to resolve the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict in peace have been fruitless.
President Aliyev said in a meeting with students in Belarus on Thursday that
Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity has been violated, and no progress has been achieved in restoring it, despite efforts by the international mediators brokering the peace process. He emphasized that Armenia continues to violate the founding principles of international law.
Azerbaijan has been facing a conflict with Armenia that began in 1988 on Armenian territorial claims. Since the early 1990s, Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan including the Upper Garabagh region and its seven surrounding districts, despite four standing UN resolutions on unconditional pullout of Armenian troops and condemnation by a number of other international organizations.
The president noted that the Azerbaijani refugees are still having to live away from their homes.
"Elementarily, they are living in the conditions of violated human rights. But we continue taking political, diplomatic and economic measures to achieve justice, lawfulness, enforcement of the UN Security Council resolutions, and restoration of our country’s territorial integrity."
The Azerbaijani president wrapped up his visit to Belarus on Friday and left for Bulgaria.*
