Baku not to back sanctions against Iran
Azerbaijan has no intention to join the sanctions of G8 countries against neighboring Iran, the Foreign Ministry spokesman Khazar Ibrahim said.
He said the key goal was to solve the international dispute through negotiations. "Sanctions should not be applied just for the sake of sanctions. The key attention should be paid to the development of relations and the solution of outstanding problems, which requires holding dialog."
Western powers charge that Iran's nuclear program poses a threat to the rest of the world but Tehran denies the allegations, saying its uranium enrichment work serves exclusively peaceful purposes. The G8 countries agreed last week to apply another set of economic sanctions against Iran. The move followed a call on the United States' allies by US Assistant Secretary of State Nicholas Burns to curb economic cooperation with the Islamic republic.
