Slovenian leader urges more effort on Garabagh solution
Slovenian President Danilo Turk has said during a visit to Baku that his country is well aware of the "sensitive issues" facing the volatile Caucasus region and regional security has an impact on security and cooperation in Europe, calling for more efforts to settle the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict.
Turk told a press conference with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Monday that the Garabagh conflict must be settled within international principles, Azerbaijan’s state-run Azertag news agency reported.
"We are not happy at all that frozen conflicts have lingered on for so long. Essentially, Upper Garabagh is one of the most long-lasting disputes, and we have not seen over the past years the desired progress in its settlement.
"The principles of the conflict resolution have been outlined in the past and are crystal clear. These principles are territorial integrity, inviolability of borders and a peaceful settlement of the conflict," Turk said.
The Slovenian president believes that certain advances were achieved in the peace process in the past, in other words, specific issues of an option for resolving the conflict were outlined.
"Speaking here in Baku, I would like to say that we support a stronger effort by the [mediating] OSCE Minsk Group and other parties involved to reach a final and unequivocal solution of the problem based on the outlined principles of the conflict settlement. I believe that all of us, Europe, are interested in this settlement, and all of us back the long-awaited stronger efforts."
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. Peace talks have not yet resulted in resolving the conflict.*
