Baku criticizes US policy over ‘inconsistency’
Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov has blamed the United States for failing to respond adequately to Baku’s efforts in maintaining partnership between the two countries.
"There should be a balance in relations between countries," Azimov told a conference at the Columbia University in New York last week. "The strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and the U.S. requires a reciprocal attitude, but we are not seeing that attitude from America. Azerbaijan’s efforts are many-fold higher than those being made by America. We consider this as inconsistency in US policy toward the region."
The deputy minister emphasized that the U.S. has not appointed its new ambassador to Azerbaijan since July.
Azimov also described Washington’s stance on the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict as passive. Citing as an example the conflict settlement efforts of officials from Russia and France – which co-chair the mediating OSCE Minsk Group along with the U.S. – he said US endeavors in the peace process should be equal and adequate.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. Peace talks have not yet resulted in resolving the conflict.*
