Iran seeking closer ties with Azerbaijan, lawmaker says
An Iranian lawmaker has said his country was seeking closer
relations with Azerbaijan, stressing close bonds between the two
nations that share a common past.
"Iran is interested in expanding its relations with Azerbaijan, a close neighbor and friend, said Suleiman Jafarzadeh, the chairman of the parliament’s social affairs commission.
In a meeting with members of the Milli Majlis (parliament) committee on social policy in Baku on Monday, Jafarzadeh noted that Iranian lawmakers have been consistently supporting their Azerbaijani counterparts within international organizations. He emphasized that Tehran backs a settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh within Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity. The MP said that Upper Garabagh is the land of Azerbaijan, noting "the aggression Azerbaijan faces must be ended soon".
Jafarzadeh said Iranian-Azerbaijani relations are based on common history, adding that "no one will be able to undermine this friendship."
Hadi Rajabli, chairman of the Azerbaijani parliamentary committee, stressed the high level of bilateral relations not only between the two countries’ legislatures but also in the economic and humanitarian aid fields.
"The friendly relations between the Azerbaijani and Iranian people began to develop in a new realm after the country’s independence was restored [after the Soviet Union’s break-up in 1991]," Rajabli said, underscoring the outstanding contribution made by the two countries’ presidents.
Speakers at the meeting noted that such visits promote boosting not only inter-parliamentary but also overall relations between Azerbaijan and Iran.*
