Turks protest 'Armenian genocide' classes in Canada

30 January 2008 22:30 (UTC+04:00)
The inclusion of the so-called "genocide of Armenians" in the curricula of lyceums in Canada's biggest city Toronto has sparked protests from Turks living in the country.
Turkish non-governmental organizations operating in Canada have launched a signature campaign in protest at the decision passed by the local education body. Azerbaijanis living in Canada and public organizations from many Islamic countries have joined the online campaign called "The group of unity". Over 10,000 signatures have been collected.
The organizers of the campaign said in a statement that teaching classes on the alleged genocide could pose a threat to the lives of Muslim students.
Turkish Ambassador to Canada Aydemir Erman has voiced protests to Canadian federal and local authorities.
Armenians say Ottoman Turks killed 1.5 million people in the early 20th century, a claim strongly denied by the Turkic states.
