Climate change raises concerns

30 January 2008 22:15 (UTC+04:00)
The number of anomaly-related hydrometeorology phenomena caused by climate change has doubled in Azerbaijan in the past 30 years, an ecology ministry official said.
Average temperature in the country rose by 0.7 degrees between 1961 and 2001. A record high of 46 degrees Celsius was registered in 2000, deputy director of the National Hydrometeorology Department Umayra Taghiyeva told journalists.
Taghiyeva said preliminary research shows that the temperature in Azerbaijan is likely to rise 2.5 degrees by 2050.
"Climate change has turned into a major problem. Evaluation will be therefore carried out and a strategic plan on adaptation measures developed by the year-end for further submission to state bodies. The document will assess the impact of climate change on human health," the ministry official said.
Taghiyeva said rising temperatures chiefly affect water resources. The Caspian Sea level is expected to rise 1.5 meters by 2040.
Taghiyeva added that if the impact of greenhouse gas emissions is not reduced and their concentration at least doubles, average temperature could rise by up to five degrees.
