Azeri scholars to access European scientific realm
Azerbaijani scholars will gain access to Europe’s scientific community through the Black Sea Interconnection (BSI) and the National GRID infrastructure (NGI) projects, the National Academy of Sciences President Mahmud Karimov said Thursday.
Karimov told the presentation of the two projects, developed by the Academy with the support of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies, that the BSI project, being implemented with the European Commission’s financial aid, envisions building infrastructure linking the South Caucasus region’s research and educational networks and combining it into the GEANT 2 European Research Center.
The project is estimated at a total of 1.9 million euros. The European Commission has allocated 1.4m euros of the amount, while the rest will be contributed by the participating states - Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia.
Under the project, about 150,000 researchers and students will avail of broad and advanced network resources. It will allow increasing internet connection speed of the South Caucasus research networks two to ten times.*
