Palestine to open embassy in Baku
The Palestinian
Authority will open an embassy in Baku, Azerbaijani Foreign
Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said after meeting his visiting
Palestinian counterpart, Riyad Al-Maliki on Thursday.
Mammadyarov told a news conference that the South Caucasus republic has, so far, maintained relations with Palestine through the latter’s embassy in Tashkent.
The Azerbaijani minister said that during his talks with Al-Maliki views were exchanged on the Middle East conflict and the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh. Voicing Baku’s intransigent stance, he said, "Azerbaijan supports the establishment of an independent Palestinian state."
Mammadyarov said Azerbaijan had offered Palestine to broker Mideast peace talks, adding that Baku was ready for any mediation in the many-decade-long dispute.
The Palestinian minister emphasized that Azerbaijan is an influential state on the world stage and plays a leading role in the region. "Nonetheless, consent of all interested parties is required for Azerbaijan’s mediation."
Al-Maliki said his visit to Baku was being paid on an instruction of the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. He said the Palestinian leader was thankful to the Azerbaijani government for its consistent support for his people’s struggle for independence.
Al-Maliki noted that the Palestinian and Azerbaijani positions overlap on political issues. He added that Palestine was interested in cooperating with Azerbaijan in the fields of economics and education.*
