Mass poisoning of schoolkids in Sumgayit
Scores of school children in the Azerbaijani town of Sumgayit suffered mass food poisoning on Friday, the Baku-based ANS TV channel reported.
According to Nadir Atakishiyev, the principal of the school where the incident took place, all 47 children were hospitalized. These included children from the third to the eighth grades, aged nine to 15.
According to a preliminary investigation, the children were poisoned by unfit dried crust. Three persons who drove up to the school in a Russian-made Zhiguli car are said to have handed out the snacks, whose expiration date was in May 2009.
The police have detained two of these people. Investigators have established that Elvin Hasanov, a 23-year-old resident of Sumgayit, and Ilkin Fatullayev, a 35-year-old resident of Baku, work for Ukraine`s Flint Night company.
The detainees said in their testimonies that the poisoning had not been caused deliberately and that they had distributed the snacks among schoolkids free of charge to promote the product.
