US plans missile shield in Azerbaijan, analyst claims

20 October 2009 22:37 (UTC+04:00)
The United States plans on stationing missile defense facilities in Azerbaijan and Russia, a Georgian analyst has said.
Niki Chitadze noted that basing such facilities on the Georgian soil is not planned at this point, though US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has not ruled out the possibility.
``Stationing missile defense elements in the Georgian territory has not been a subject of discussion in the Obama administration altogether,`` the pundit said. ``At this point, two locations -- Azerbaijan and Russia`s Krasnodar province -- have been designated.``
Chitadze said that, at the same time, the U.S. is vigorously negotiating the stationing of a missile shield in the Black Sea region, though Washington will most likely be unable to agree with Moscow to that end.
Russia leases a Soviet-era radar station in Azerbaijan`s western Gabala district under an agreement which expires in 2012. Moscow earlier offered to the U.S. to jointly use the radar as an alternative to Washington`s plan to station missile defense facilities in Poland and the Czech Republic. Lately, the Obama administration said it was shelving the plan to base a missile shield in Eastern Europe.
