Azerbaijan stages large-scale drills in the Caspian
Azerbaijan`s frontier guards have conducted
large-scale exercises in the Caspian Sea.
The three-day drills focused on practicing search and rescue operations in case of potential threats to the Caspian shore, islands, oil and gas export pipelines and oil platforms.
According to State Border Service chief Elchin Guliyev, 2,000 servicemen, three helicopters, some 30 ships and patrol boats, and armored vehicles were involved in the exercises.
``The frontier guards displayed high combat readiness and fulfilled the outlined tasks,`` Guliyev said.
He added that the exercises had no bearing on Turkmenistan`s statements on creating a navy in the Caspian, made in late August, and had been planned beforehand.
