Young Azeri to head Turkic parliament assembly
A 31-year-old Azerbaijani has been elected the first secretary-general of the Turkic states` parliamentary assembly, a group that also comprises Turkey, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
Ramil Hasanov, chairman of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party`s (NAP) youth organization, will hold the post for four years, according to a decision passed at the assembly`s session in Baku on Tuesday.
The legislative body also elected deputies of the secretary-general. Candidates representing the other three members of the assembly were approved for the positions.
Under the assembly`s bylaws, one may serve as its secretary-general for only one term, while deputies may be elected twice provided that they do not hold any other posts in the secretariat.
The Turkic parliamentary assembly`s secretariat, headquartered in the Azerbaijani capital, will embark on its duties in January 2010. Its annual budget has been set at 300,000 euros.
The new secretary-general said three commissions will operate under the assembly`s secretariat. According to him, one of them will deal with education, science, culture and linguistics, while one more will regulate inter-parliamentary lawmaking and international relations, and the other commission will facilitate economic and trade cooperation.
Participants adopted a statement in conclusion, calling for unity of the Turkic states in the conditions of a new world order.
``The Assembly, taking as a basis the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of borders of the participating countries, is keen on contributing to the deepening of political and economic relations among states,`` the statement said.
The Turkic states` parliamentary assembly was established in November 2008. The Baku meeting of the organization was attended by the parliament speakers of the four member states.
Mehmet Ali Sahin, head of Turkey`s Grand National Assembly, in his remarks, called on Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, which have, so far, declined membership, to join the group.
``We hope Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan will join the Turkic PA as well. For this to happen, relations need to be expanded with these countries,`` said Sahin.
The Turkish speaker voiced confidence that the Turkic states will treat each other`s problems more thoroughly.
``Unification is a good thing, but coming together fosters certain commitments. If we are brothers and friends, we have to treat each other`s problems with sensitivity,`` Sahin said.
The Turkic assembly will hold its next meeting in Kazakhstan`s capital, Astana, in October 2010. Its sessions take place every year in one of the group`s member states on a rotation basis.
