Russian-Azeri border shut for Georgians
Georgian citizens will no longer be able to travel
by road from Azerbaijan to Russia.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has said that, since Georgia has seceded from the former Soviet bloc CIS, a ban has been imposed on its citizens` entering Russia from the neighboring South Caucasus republic.
``Georgia`s secession from CIS on August 18, 2009 automatically excludes its citizens from being authorized to enter and exit the country through the Russia-Azerbaijan border checkpoints,`` the ministry said.
It said that, according to the standing agreement of the CIS states, Russia`s border with its southern neighbor is open only for citizens of its member states.
The relations between Moscow and Tbilisi soured after a brief war in Georgia`s breakaway republic of South Ossetia in August 2008.
