EU drafting plan on South Caucasus states - report
The European Union is developing a new strategy on
Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia, a Radio Liberty reporter says.
Sweden, the current EU chair, has requested that the 27-member bloc`s states devise a plan on deepening relations with the three South Caucasus republics. Ahto Lobjakas, Radio Liberty Brussels correspondent, points out that the EU has, so far, envisioned such programs as the European Neighborhood Policy and Eastern Partnership for the South Caucasus but, evidently, these projects have not enabled the EU to pursue a sustainable and clear-cut policy toward the regional states.
Lobjakas wrote, referring to reports circulating in Brussels, that the new strategy does not drastically differ from the EU`s current policies. The organization`s goals remain the same, and it is seeking to bring the laws and policies in the three countries into compliance with European standards to the greatest extent possible.
According to Lobjakas, a general outline of the planned agreements has been proposed to all three states. Enforcing these agreements could foster free trade and liberalization in the issuance of visas. However, just as in the previous proposals, the strategy does not yet offer EU membership.
