Turkish envoy condemns 1918 mass killings
The Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Hulusi Kilic,
has condemned the genocide committed against Azeris by Armenians in
1918 after visiting the mass grave in the Guba district.
Having visited the site during a trip to the country`s northern regions on Friday, Kilic said he was awestruck by the atrocities and pledged to personally promote giving these crimes a due legal review on an international scale.
"There cannot be more substantial evidence for exposing Armenians, who are announcing throughout the world that they were subjected to genocide," Kilic said. "The world community must be immediately notified of this burial. I always say that history should be written by historians. So, these kind of flaws are omitted when it is written by politicians."
In 1918, Armenians killed over 50,000 Azeris throughout the republic and expelled 10,000 people from their homes. 16,000 people were slain in the Guba district alone.
The Turkish envoy`s visit also sought to familiarize himself with the economic and cultural development and the potential for tourism in northern Azerbaijan. The diplomat held a number of meetings with executive officials of the Khachmaz and Guba districts and exchanged views with representatives of the local communities.
