Civilian killed in captivity honored

25 August 2009 22:05 (UTC+04:00)
An Azerbaijani civilian who was in the Armenian captivity in 1991 during the war between the two countries and was killed with utmost brutality has been posthumously conferred with a state award.
The circumstances of the death of Farhad Atakishiyev, born in 1970, have been confirmed by Azerbaijan`s State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons. Thus, Armenian servicemen subjected Atakishiyev to unbearable torture to force him to say that Garabagh, an Azerbaijani region under Armenian occupation, ``belongs to Armenians.`` However, the man, who did not back down in the face of death, said the opposite, asserting that ``Garabagh belongs to Azerbaijan and will always belong to it.``
A forensic expertise has revealed 72 traces of torture capable of causing death on Atakishiyev`s body.
The state commission had submitted information collected about Atakishiyev to President Ilham Aliyev, and he was posthumously awarded the ``Azerbaijani flag`` order, according to the presidential decree issued on July 28.
