US firm chosen to launch Azerbaijan`s satellite
Manufacturing of Azerbaijan`s first space satellite
is due to begin in September. The work has been vested in the
US-based Orbital Sciences Corporation that has won a tender for the
project, Minister of Communications and Information Technologies,
Ali Abbasov, has told reporters.
Azerbaijan plans to launch the communication satellite into the orbit in December 2011, Abbasov said.
The country`s TV broadcasts are being transmitted through satellites of other countries at present.
The national satellite will be manufactured in the United States with the aid of Azerbaijani specialists. The project is estimated at 163 million manats (over $200 million).
Azerbaijan will use the satellite only to 15-20 percent of its capacity, while the rest of it is slated for international use. Orders have already been received for using the device. Malaysia, which was the first to place an order, intends to use 40 percent of the satellite`s resources.
Once ready, the satellite will be put into orbit using Kazakhstan`s Baikonur Cosmodrome.
