Two Iranian TV reporters detained
The police in Azerbaijan`s southern Lankaran district have detained two employees of Iran`s Seher (Morning) TV channel. The detention is due to the expiry of the Iranian citizens` visas on July 23, a source from the district police department has told Radio Liberty.
The two were handed over to Azerbaijan`s immigration authorities two hours thereafter, the source said.
But a spokeswoman for the State Migration Service, said the service was not aware of the development.
Another Iranian television channel, Press TV, has reported that the journalists have not yet been released from custody. The broadcaster maintained that the Lankaran police had sought 600 manats ($750) from the journalists, but, after they refused to pay, the law enforcers raised the visa issue. Press TV alleged that the reporters had not overstayed their visas.
The police department has dismissed the charge it had demanded money from the Iranian citizens.
The Seher TV channel is known for its severe criticism of the neighboring country.
