German lawmaker not allowed to meet jailed bloggers
German Bundestag member Jorg Tauss has not been
allowed to meet with two jailed young bloggers during a visit to
Azerbaijan last week, according to the father of one of the
youngsters.
Hikmat Hajizade claimed that no explanation had been provided for the refusal. Hajizade said that he, himself, has not been able to call on his son so far, adding that his relevant appeal to the investigative body remained unanswered.
Isakhan Ashurov, the defense lawyer, said he was unaware whether or not the German MP had been granted permission to meet with his client.
Bloggers Adnan Hajizade and Emin Milli were arrested after a brawl at a Lebanese restaurant in Baku on July 8 and subsequently charged with hooliganism. According to law enforcement agencies, they misbehaved and used force against two other men. Hajizade and Milli were remanded in custody for two months pending trial. They face 2-5 years in prison if found guilty.
The Bundestag member`s visit was widely covered by the German media. Several citizens of Germany and other European states have appealed to the Azerbaijani government, requesting that the youngsters be released.
