Armenia `disbelieves conflict resolution over a decade`
Armenia does not believe that the Upper (Nagorno)
Garabagh conflict will be resolved over the next ten years,
chairman of the Public Council under the Armenian President has
said.
Vazgen Manukian claimed that resolution of the dispute could be delayed due to Azerbaijan`s asserting that the status of Upper Garabagh is to be determined strictly within the country`s territorial integrity.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven adjacent Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. Though the separatist regime in Upper Garabagh declared so-called independence at the time of the Soviet collapse in 1991, this ``independence``, which blatantly tramples on international law, has not been recognized by the world community.
Manukian, who recently met with the leaders of the self-proclaimed republic and the local population, admitted that Armenians living in the region have little confidence that the conflict will be resolved in their favor. ``Garabagh`s population does not indulge in hopes that the conflict will be settled soon,`` he said. ``But they are expecting support for a peaceful solution of the problem from the Armenian leadership.``
