US lawmaker calls for increasing Azerbaijan supporters in Congress
The number of members of the US congressional
taskforce on Azerbaijan should be brought to 100-120 to advance
efforts aiming to lift the amendment that restricts US assistance
to the Azerbaijani government, a US lawmaker says.
Bill Shuster, a Pennsylvania congressman who co-chairs the taskforce, stressed the importance of promoting awareness about Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act among congressmen. ``Congress members, who are witnessing a commonality of energy, security and stability interests with Azerbaijan, which has maintained strategic partnership with the United States through the most challenging times, will be more inclined to join the initiative on lifting Section 907,`` Shuster told a news briefing held recently by the US-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce in Washington.
Addressing influential politicians and business representatives, the congressman emphasized Azerbaijan`s being at a strategically beneficial location and the importance of its abundant natural resources for global security.
Further, Shuster said democratic development is one of the key aspects in US-Azerbaijan relations. He noted that building democracy is a lengthy and complicated process. ``Americans often forget that we have accomplished what we have today over 230 years. Everything is not ideal in Azerbaijan. But I do believe that Azerbaijan will continue building a democracy step by step.``
