Updated version of Madrid paper drafted: US mediator
The updated version of the Madrid principles for
settling the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict was developed at a meeting
of the mediating OSCE Minsk Group (MG) co-chairs held in Poland,
the US negotiator has told Radio Liberty.
The co-chairs - Yuri Merzlyakov of Russia, Bernard Fassier of France and Matthew Bryza of the United States - held a working session in Krakow on Monday. The mediators discussed preparation of the updated version of the Madrid Document, a set of basic principles for the conflict resolution presented to the sides in the Spanish capital in 2007, in accord with the declaration adopted by the MG co-chairing countries` leaders at a recent G8 summit in Italy.
According to the US co-chair, the renewed proposals allow finalizing the preparation of basic principles of the conflict settlement.
Bryza also expressed hope that Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sarkisian will meet on the sidelines of a CIS summit to be held in Chisinau in October.
Of note, the French negotiator told Armenpress news agency on Monday that the updated version of the Madrid principles is not completely ready yet and it requires the MG co-chairs to hold several more meetings.
The conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia emerged due to Armenia`s territorial claims in the late 1980s, the last few years of the Soviet Union. A lengthy war ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Yerevan continues its policy of occupation, defying international law.
