Over 1,200 arrested for drug dealing in six months
Law-enforcement bodies arrested 1,243 people for
drug dealing in the first six months of 2009, according to the head
of the working group under the state drug enforcement
commission.
Araz Aliguliyev told a meeting on Tuesday that 37 of the detainees were foreigners, including 11 citizens of CIS countries, while the rest come from Iran, Turkey, Nigeria, etc. Three of the Azerbaijanis are under 18 years of age, 304 are under 30, while 28 are women. A total of 1,177 of the detainees are unemployed.
In operations carried out by law-enforcers, over 1 ton and 200 kilograms of different narcotic substances have been impounded. 70 percent of such facts occurred in southern districts, which is explained by the fact that drugs, mainly heroin, enter Azerbaijan from Iran.
