Frontier guards face armed trespassers
A shooting occurred between Azerbaijan`s frontier
guards and a group of unknown individuals on the country`s northern
border with Russia last Wednesday night.
The frontier guards prevented an attempt by an armed group of six or seven persons to illegally cross Azerbaijan`s border in a mountainous area located in the Balakan district bordering on the Russian republic of Daghestan, the State Border Service said in a statement.
One frontier guard was wounded in the skirmish. As a result of retaliation, one of the trespassers was killed, while another one was wounded. The dead militant has yet to be identified. The other members of the group managed to escape, taking advantage of the dark and the forested lands in the area.
As a result of tracking the armed group, the frontier guards confiscated an abandoned bag containing large quantities of hand grenades, ammunition and food supplies required for a long stay in the mountainous area.
Two members of the group were later detained. The men are aged 34 and 29, according to the Interior Ministry. The country of their citizenship is not being disclosed for the time being.
According to the Border Service`s statement, operations are underway to trace and detain the remaining members of the gang.
A source at the Prosecutor General`s Office has said the absence of any documents on the dead trespasser is complicating his identification.
"He was a man of middle age. His beard is grounds to assert that he belonged to some radical religious group," it said.
