Sweden`s FM leads EU delegation on S Caucasus visit
Sweden`s Foreign Minister Carl Bildt is to lead the European Union`s troika visit to the South Caucasus states Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia on July 16-20. Meetings with presidents and foreign ministers are expected in all three countries, according to the EU website.
The troika includes representatives of the incumbent, previous and future chairs of the 27-member bloc.
Accompanying Bildt on the trip will be European Commission representatives Karel Kovanda and John Kjaer, the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby, and Paolo Barroso Simoes of the Council Secretariat.
Spain`s Ambassador on Special Mission to Central Asia, Santiago Chamorro, will represent the next country to hold the Presidency.
The trip will also encompass a field visit to the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia.
The EU said it considers South Caucasus as an area of strategic importance. The Eastern Partnership, a program on Europe`s closer cooperation with its ex-Soviet neighbors - Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus - means "new opportunities to contribute to stability and reform in the three countries," it added.
