Iran`s move seen as bid to rile Azerbaijan
Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian`s invitation to Iran is a political step aiming to anger Azerbaijan, former Azerbaijani ambassador in Tehran has said.
Nasib Nasibli told the Baku-based ATV channel that the visit is a response to Israeli President Shimon Peres` June 28 visit to Baku.
Iran`s Ambassador to Armenia, Ali Saqaian, conveyed an invitation of his country`s Defense Minister Mustafa Mohammad Najjar in a meeting with Ohanian on Friday.
According to Nasibli, the southern neighbor might continue taking steps defying Azerbaijan`s interests in the future.
MP Malahat Ibrahimgyzy believes that, by inviting the Armenian defense chief, Tehran has once again demonstrated that it is pursuing a double standard policy by seeking to boost its defense cooperation with Armenia, Azerbaijan`s long-time foe.
"Having signed a document recognizing Armenia as an invader on one hand, while providing military backing to this country on the other, is, certainly, incomprehensible," the lawmaker said.
Among Islamic states, Iran is maintaining the closest cooperation with Armenia.
