Azeri army `strongest in Caucasus, ready for combat`
The Azerbaijani army is the most powerful in the
Caucasus region, and the country`s armed forces stand ready to
fulfill a combat order from the commander-in-chief, President Ilham
Aliyev, Defense Minister Safar Abiyev told the graduation ceremony
at the High Military School named after Heydar Aliyev last
week.
President Aliyev, who was present during military exercises last Wednesday, said while addressing the servicemen that ongoing peace talks with Armenia on returning Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh have been fruitless, emphasizing that liberation of the Armenia-occupied territories of Azerbaijan by force remains the country`s sovereign right.
Minister Abiyev said this lays major responsibility on the Azerbaijani military and that the president is confident that the armed forces` ability will live up to these expectations.
Azerbaijan`s armed forces carried out large-scale drills last week that were observed by President Aliyev. Taking part in the exercises were units of the Defense Ministry, State Border Service and Interior Troops.
President Aliyev stressed that the Azerbaijani military should be ready to free the country`s territories at a moment`s notice.
