LUKoil gas station robbers identified
The crime was committed by an officer of the Defense Ministry,
senior lieutenant Kamran Asadov who had deserted his military unit
in the Khanlar district after stealing large quantities of
weapons.
The outlaws stole about 2,800 manats ($3,300) from the gas station located in the Nizami district across from the Shefa Stadium.
During the robbery that took place around 11.00 p.m., a 24-year old worker, Samir Guliyev, was subjected to sub-machine gun fire. He was rushed to hospital and is currently in grave condition.
Eyewitnesses said the three burglars, armed with sub-machine guns, were seen getting out of a car near the gas station and demanded money from the employees. Two of the workers gave away all the money they had, but another one took to running. The gunners opened fire from the back and wounded him, and then escaped with the stolen cash.
Investigators have established that Asadov was part of a radical Wahhabi group that earlier planned an armed attack on diplomatic missions of the countries included in the international anti-terror coalition and government agencies. He had conspired with other members of the group and went on unauthorized leave from his military unit after stealing four Kalashnikov rifles, one grenade launcher, 20 hand grenades, rounds and other automatic weapon parts.
The criminals hid part of the ammunition in the Ismayilly district, 190 km northwest of Baku, and then came to the capital. The National Security Ministry on October 27 detained part of the group in the Mashtaga settlement. One of the plotters was killed after showing resistance and five more arrested during the special operation.
Part of the ammunition was impounded on the spot, while the rest was found in Ismayilly.
US and British embassies had to scale back operations over the security threat, but later resumed their activity in full.
In the past two weeks this was the fourth such incident across the country and the second one in the capital. A while ago armed robbers barged into the central post office in Azerbaijan's northwestern city of Ganja, stealing 37,000 manats ($43,500) and killing two people. A subsidiary of the Masally furniture plant in the same city was robbed as well.
On October 19, five unidentified individuals committed an armed burglary at a local ABU company's gas-filling station off the Baku-Shamakhi highway. The masked robbers carrying firearms intimidated the employees, taking 1,300 manats ($1,530) and three cell phones. The identity of the criminals could not be established.
