Changes to religion law passed

30 June 2009 23:16 (UTC+04:00)
The Azerbaijani parliament on Tuesday passed amendments and addenda to the Law on Freedom of Religious Faith.
Under the changes, the appointments of clerical leaders who have received education abroad are banned. Moreover, Azerbaijan`s clerical body, the Caucasus Clerical Office (CCO), while appointing Imams and Akhunds to shrines, is obliged to agree their candidacies with a relevant executive authority, i.e. with the State Committee for Work with Religious Associations.
The CCO earlier disapproved of these changes to the religion law.
