Israeli president`s upcoming visit `historic event` - envoy
Israeli President Shimon Peres` upcoming visit to
Azerbaijan is a historic event since no president from Israel has
ever visited the region, Israeli Ambassador Arthur Lenk recently
said.
"The Israeli president`s visit will be a message to those who claim Israel has a hostile attitude toward Muslim countries," Lenk told reporters in Baku.
According to Lenk, during the June 28 visit Peres will be accompanied by a delegation comprising 50 to 60 people, including three ministers. The Israeli leader is scheduled to meet with representatives of the local Jewish community and address a university in Baku.
Ambassador Lenk believes that Peres` visit will launch a new stage in Israel-Azerbaijan relations. He noted that both countries are interested in stability and security.
Lenk emphasized that it would be absurd to compare Israeli-Armenian relations with those his country maintains with Azerbaijan, "at least for the single reason that there is an Israeli embassy in Azerbaijan, while in Armenia there is not."
The ambassador expressed hope that Azerbaijan`s embassy would open in Tel-Aviv after mutual visits by the two countries` presidents. "This meets the interests of Azerbaijan," he added.
