20 convicted on terror charges
20 religious radicals arrested on charges of
terrorism were handed down jail sentences in Azerbaijan on
Thursday.
Kamran Asadov, a former army officer, was sentenced to 15 years in jail, while the other individuals received prison terms of two to 14 years, according to a ruling of the Grave Crimes Court.
Investigators concluded that the defendants had set up a radical religious organization. They were convicted of breaking into a gas-filling station owned by Russian energy giant LUKoil as well as masterminding terror acts against the US and British embassies in Baku.
The defendants refused to stand up when the verdict was being pronounced in protest. As the judge read out the verdict, they chanted "Allahu Akbar" ("Allah is great").
