Journalist convicted for bribery
An Azerbaijani journalist charged with bribery was handed down a six-year jail sentence on Monday.
The opposition Bizim Yol newspaper's writer Mushfig Huseynov was also deprived of the right to journalistic activity for two years, under a relevant ruling of the Grave Crimes Court.
Defense lawyer Vugar Khasayev has termed the verdict as baseless and pledged to appeal it.
Huseynov was detained by the National Security Ministry on July 23, 2007. He had urged the chief-of-staff of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security to give him a $3,000 bribe, threatening to publish an exposing article about the ministry's senior officials otherwise.
Bizim Yol is known for maintaining close ties with the opposition Popular Front Party (PFPA).
Huseynov is one of the four journalists still imprisoned in Azerbaijan.
