Ministry probing Iran`s work on disputed oil field
The Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry is scrutinizing
Iran`s tackling exploratory drilling on the Alov oil field in the
Caspian Sea that has long been disputed between the two neighboring
littoral states, Minister Elmar Mammadyarov has said.
Mammadyarov recalled that news to that end was first broken by the English-language Tehran Times newspaper, noting that former Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev and Iran`s supreme clerical leader Khamnei had previously agreed that neither country would develop the area until the delineation of the Caspian seabed is completed. "The sooner we wrap up the basin`s delimitation, the sooner broad opportunities for working there could open up," he said.
The Tehran Times had quoted Oil Minister Gholam-Hossein Nozari as saying that issues related to the Caspian Sea legal regime -- which the five littoral states still have not finalized -- have been taken into consideration and there is no problem in this regard, indirectly implying that the field belongs to Iran. According to Nozari, two Iranian companies are conducting feasibility studies for the exploratory well project.
