Two US lawmakers offer to lift trade restrictions from Azerbaijan

10 June 2009 13:53 (UTC+04:00)
Two US lawmakers have offered to repeal a restriction on trade with Azerbaijan.
Robert Wexler, representing the House of Representatives subcommittee for Europe and the Turkish-Caucasus friendship group, and Congressman Bill Shuster, co-chairman of the taskforce on Azerbaijan, submitted a bill on lifting restrictions imposed by the Jackson-Vanik amendment from the country, according to the Azerbaijani embassy in the United States.
The congressmen insisted that the South Caucasus republic, Washington`s strategic security and energy partner, has long met its obligations to comply with freedom of emigration requirements, calling on the legislature to remove the restrictions.
The Jackson-Vanik amendment, supplemented to the US Trade Act of 1974, bans enforcement of the most favored commerce regulations with certain countries restricting emigration rights to their citizens.
