Azeri-Armenian showdown in Moscow
Scores of Azerbaijani and Armenian students clashed in Moscow on Monday.
Some 300 youngsters gathered around the Ryazanski Avenue in the Russian capital and attempted to start a fight, but the police timely interfered to prevent stand-off, the Baku-based Lider TV channel reported. An Azeri student received a severe head injury during the confrontation but his condition is currently normal.
The skirmish was caused by a dispute that flared up at an online forum on the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict.
The Russian law enforcers detained some of the youngsters for violating public order. Guns and cold weapons, including knives, were impounded from Armenian students during a search. It was ascertained that these persons were representatives of the radical Dashnaktsutyun party.
All Azerbaijani detainees were released after interference by the embassy of Azerbaijan in Moscow.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for over a decade. Peace talks kicked off after a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994 but have brought little tangible result so far. Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven adjacent Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law.
