Azeris home after Indian hostage crisis
Eight Azerbaijani crew members of a Turkish vessel
have returned home after the ship was held in Indian waters for
five months.
The Mira ship, owned by a Turkish company, has been kept by Indian authorities due to outstanding debts. A total of 24 people, including Azerbaijanis and Turks, were held hostage. However, due to the flooding of the ship`s machine room, the crew had to be released on May 20 and allowed to disembark. Official permission to return home was granted to crew members following talks between Azerbaijani embassy representative and local authorities.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that the released crew intends to sue the Turkish owner of the ship and the administration of the Indian port of Bhab-Nagar in the European Court of Human Rights.
