Health officials dismiss unknown disease`s link to swine flu

27 May 2009 13:23 (UTC+04:00)
Azerbaijani health officials have allayed fears of a swine flu outbreak after several people in the central Saatly district were reported to have contracted an unknown disease.
The Health Ministry said in a statement that five members of a family in the district`s Naharly village had been, in fact, diagnosed with food poisoning, dismissing speculations that they could have been exposed to the swine flu virus that has now spread around the world.
"An examination has revealed that the Gasymovs had consumed home-made food which caused their illness. The condition of four patients is currently satisfactory, while the other member of the family, 48-year-old Shahin Gasymov, passed away after suffering an epileptic seizure," the statement reads.
According to the ministry, Gasymov`s sudden death and the urgent hospitalization of his relatives had created the wrong impression in the local media.
The incident took place on Friday. One of the family members, Akif Gasymov, 52, says the health problems they experienced had emerged after his brother, who worked at a construction site in Baku, returned to his native village. Thus, the people in their household began to suffer from fever and nausea. Only a day later, another family member visiting their home discovered the sick relatives and immediately took them to a hospital.
