Azeri serviceman captured; circumstances unknown
An Azerbaijani serviceman fell into Armenian
captivity on Sunday, according to Shahin Sayilov, the secretary of
the Azerbaijan State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and
Missing Persons.
He said that 19-year-old Anar Hajiyev, who was serving at a
military unit in the Fizuli district, predominantly occupied by
Armenia, was captured under unknown circumstances in the morning
hours.
"The Armenian side says the serviceman allegedly turned himself in.
However, we are currently scrutinizing in which conditions our
soldier was captured. He could have lost his way in the fog, as the
weather was foggy there that morning," Sayilov said.
The Azerbaijani state commission is preparing to appeal to the
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which is involved
in facilitating the handover of POWs.
