29 April 2009 03:18 (UTC+04:00)
The upper storey of a hotel under construction in the Bilgah settlement of Baku collapsed on Monday evening, killing four people, the Sabunchu district prosecutor`s office said.
The accident occurred after wooden structures broke down under the weight of concrete during concrete-pouring operations at the building, which is being constructed by the local Azinko company.
Deadly construction accidents have already happened in Baku in the past. In August 2007, about 30 people were killed during the construction of a high-rise building in the Yasamal district of the capital. Just weeks before that, the collapse of the second floor of the Neapol recreation center, located off the Baku-Sumgayit highway, claimed two workers` lives and injured several others.
A total of 100 people were killed in construction accidents in Azerbaijan in 2007-2008, according to the State Labor Inspectorate.
