Azerbaijan resolutely condemns the terrorist attacks carried out in Barcelona, the spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan, Hikmat Hajiyev said.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those killed in the terrorist attacks, and wish speediest recovery to the injured. As a country suffering from terrorism, the Republic of Azerbaijan resolutely condemns all forms and manifestations of terrorism,” he said.

"Azerbaijan, as a country suffering from terrorism, strongly condemns all of its forms and manifestations," Hajiyev said.

Previously, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev extended condolences to the King of Spain Felipe VI over the terrorist attacks in Barcelona.

Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov also sent a letter of condolence to his Spanish counterpart Alfonso Maria Dastis.

A terror attack in Barcelona left 13 people dead and more than 100 injured. The deadly events began in the early evening with a van plowing through crowds on the renowned Las Ramblas avenue, a popular tourist section of Barcelona.

Authorities said they are working under the assumption that two other deadly events, a terrorist incident in the seaside city of Cambrils and a house explosion farther down the coast in Alcanar, were linked to the van attack in Barcelona that had ISIS taking credit.

Hajiyev added that there are no Azerbaijani citizens among those who were killed or injured in the terrorist attacks in Barcelona.

He noted that the Azerbaijani Embassy is in contact with the relevant Spanish authorities.

Several victims of the terror attack haven’t been identified yet, said the spokesman, adding that the media and the public will be informed if additional information is available.
