Aliyev calls security meeting
President Ilham Aliyev told a meeting of the
Security Council on Monday that Azerbaijan was pursuing an
independent policy to assert its position on the world stage and
fully ensure its multi-faceted development.
Aliyev said protecting the country`s national interest was the top priority for his government and that Azerbaijan has made tremendous progress in this respect.
"Our opportunities for pursuing an independent policy are contributing immensely to Azerbaijan`s comprehensive development. By adopting independent decisions, both with respect to our domestic and foreign policies, we are defending the interests of the Azerbaijani people to the maximum extent, and this policy will be continued further."
President Aliyev stressed that Azerbaijan has asserted itself as a reliable partner both in the region and on a worldwide scale. He noted that Baku`s independent policy, along with driving development in the country, allows Azerbaijan to properly forge its relations with the rest of the world in a long-term perspective.
"Azerbaijan`s policy is predictable, it is aimed at ensuring peace, well-being and security in the region," Aliyev said.
With regard to regional issues, Aliyev emphasized that the past experience proves that large-scale trans-national energy and transport projects, as well as political initiatives put forward by Azerbaijan, are being successfully carried out.
"Without Azerbaijan`s participation, certainly, these initiatives of great geo-political importance would have never been executed. Our will, political approach as well as successful regional cooperation - trends that emerged with our close involvement - all these have made new realities in the region possible."
The president noted that his country`s policy has always been straightforward, clear and beneficial for all regional states.
"We are following the developments that are taking place and may take place in the region. Potential geo-political changes are being tracked and necessary measures are being taken. I would like to state, once again, that Azerbaijan will never back down from its position of principle in this respect," Aliyev said.
Further, the president underlined that Azerbaijan has never interfered with the internal affairs of other countries and has no intention to do so in the future.
"Azerbaijan has never meddled and will not meddle in the bilateral relations between other states either. But, at the same time, pursuing a policy that complies with the situation that emerges or may emerge in the region is our natural right, and we will be exercising it in any given shape or form."
International media have been circulating reports that Turkey plans to re-open its border with Armenia, a country with which Ankara faces decades of tensions. The news has sparked an outcry in Azerbaijan, which has endured Armenia`s long-standing policy of occupation.
