EU envoy criticizes removal of presidential term limits
The European Union`s Special Representative for
the South Caucasus, Peter Semneby, has said the recent removal of a
two-term limit on the president from Azerbaijan`s Constitution
contradicted Europe`s democratic trends.
The statement, made at a news conference in Baku, referred to the
measure approved by the March 18 referendum on constitutional
changes in Azerbaijan. The European Commission on Democracy through
Law (Venice Commission) has also maintained that the amendments
were not in line with European democratic principles.
Semneby said he concurred with the Venice Commission`s feedback,
adding that some democratic-legal institutions have not
sufficiently developed in Azerbaijan during the transition
period.
