New Israeli gov`t says co-op with Azerbaijan priority
Cooperation with Azerbaijan is one of the new
Israeli government`s top political priorities, Israeli Ambassador
Arthur Lenk has told journalists. The diplomat added that the
formation of the new Israeli government would help to further
expand bilateral relations. On March 31, the Israeli Knesset
(parliament) voted to form a new government, while Benjamin
Netanyahu becomes the country`s prime minister for a second
term.
It is worth noting that many people in the new Israeli government are Jews who have immigrated from FSU countries. In fact, 10% of MPs and four ministers are Russian-speaking Jews. Avigdor Lieberman, who came to Israel from Moldova, is now the country`s foreign minister. This tendency is not universally welcomed in Israel, as many believe that Russian-speakers will impose a different mentality on the Israeli government.
The ambassador pointed to traditionally warm relations between the two countries, noting that top Israeli officials` visit to Azerbaijan was evidence of such warmth.
