Baku, Ankara agree to extend regional rail line

7 November 2007 13:11 (UTC+04:00)
Head of the Turkish town's municipality Nuraddin Araz said the construction of the regional railway will foster closer bonds between the two countries.
"This will link Nakhchivan and Gars via Igdir. The railway will also open access for the town itself to all parts of Turkey," Araz said.
The $600 million railway will link Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey and create the shortest route to transport cargo between Europe and Asia. 1.5 million passengers and 3 million tons of cargo will be transported by the route in 2010, with the figures to reach 3.5 million passengers and 16.5 million tons by 2034.
Araz said agreement had also been reached to build an airport in Igdir with Azerbaijan's financial assistance.
"We attach particular importance to this airport. Its construction will boost the commodities turnover between the two brotherly nations and further expand bilateral economic and cultural relations," the Turkish official added.
