Outgoing Russian envoy content with his mission
Vasiliy Istratov, the outgoing Russian ambassador to
Azerbaijan, expressed confidence during his final news conference,
saying his diplomatic mission in the country was successful.
Istratov said relations between the two countries improved during his tenure as ambassador.
"The relationship between the two presidents played an important role in making this happen. Their mutual visits provided a major incentive to the development of bilateral political and economic ties," Istratov said.
Touching on the delineation of the Russia-Azerbaijan border, he emphasized that only a 15-meter area remains disputed between Moscow and Baku. Moreover, some locations have yet to be agreed upon in the areas crossed by the Russian, Azerbaijani and Georgian borders. The issue will be put to discussion at the next meeting of the Russian-Azerbaijani inter-governmental commission, Istratov said, adding that all disputed issues would find solutions through negotiations.
The outgoing ambassador said he was connected to Azerbaijan through good memories and he would never forget the time spent here. He said he intended to take with him several locally-made carpets, noting that the best carpets in the world are woven in Azerbaijan, a country with long-standing traditions of carpet-making.
Istratov did not disclose his plans for future activities.
Istratov`s successor has already been named. The new Russian ambassador, Vladimir Dorokhin, is expected to arrive in Azerbaijan in late March or early April.
