Foreigners barred from editorial roles in media
Foreigners and persons without higher educations
cannot work as editors in Azerbaijan`s media, according to changes
introduced to the nation`s laws. Friday`s meeting of the Milli
Majlis (parliament) adopted the ban when approving amendments to
Article 19 of the Law on Mass Media.
If a foreigner or a person without higher education is appointed as editor of a print media outlet, the publication may be suspended or stopped by the courts.
If a media organization commits a breach of the freedom of speech or rights of a journalist twice within one year, its activity may be suspended for two months.
The new version of Article 19 of the law says, further, that a media outlet may be suspended or shut down for circulating calls or information causing damage to the security and integrity of the state and public order.
