Currently, the seismological situation in the territory of Azerbaijan is at the background level, said Gurban Yetirmishli.

The head of the Republican Seismological Service Center said that during March only one significant earthquake was recorded in the country.

“In February, several shocks with a magnitude forcing over three were recorded, but they were not felt. Some of these tremors were registered in the Caspian Sea, in Hajigabul. And an earthquake of magnitude 3.7 was registered in the occupied Kelbajar region of Azerbaijan. Due to the insignificant depth of the tremors, the earthquake was felt,” he said.

The specialist noted that weak and imperceptible tremors occur daily and this is a normal phenomenon. "Weak pushes are not dangerous and they are not felt by people," he said.

Yetirmishli also noted that there is no seismic activity on the territory of Baku.

Azerbaijan, located within the central part of the Mediterranean mobile belt, is considered to be a seismically active region – a lot of earthquakes occur over Azerbaijan every year, however, majority of them are not felt.

Besides, the geological environment is intruded upon by intensive technical loads such as drilling, set up of deep water platforms, underwater and ground conduits which make the problem of geological hazard assessment in Azerbaijan more actual and substantial.

Epicenter of bulk of the earthquakes, being recorded in Absheron Peninsula and Baku, are located in the Caspian Sea. Overall, Baku represents high seismic hazard and the level increases with the time interval.
