Official warns of opponents to friendly Baku-Ankara ties
A senior Azerbaijani official has said the leadership of Azerbaijan and Turkey would never allow a worsening of bilateral relations, following reports suggesting that Turkey is backing down from a tough stance against Armenia, Azerbaijan`s long-time foe.
Radio Liberty`s Armenia service has reported that Turkey was backing down from its demand put forward to Armenia on pulling out from the occupied Azerbaijani territories for the sake of normalizing its relations with Yerevan. It said that Ankara merely insists on establishing a joint commission of historians to study the 1915 developments in Ottoman Turkey that Armenia claims amounted to "genocide."
"There are quite a few parties interested in the emergence of tension in Azerbaijan-Turkey relations, but the leaders of the two fraternal countries living under the "one nation, two states" principle will not let this happen," Novruz Mammadov, head of the international relations department of the President`s Office, told a Baku-based TV channel.
Mammadov also said Ankara would not allow for its relations with Baku to be tarnished.
"This situation could not but cause certain discontent. But the history of relations between the two countries has deep roots. We are linked closer by friendship, brotherhood, neighborhood as well as strategic partnership. It should not be forgotten that along with the opening of [Turkey`s] border with Armenia, it was the Turkish leaders who have put forth the principle of a just settlement to the [Armenia-Azerbaijan] Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict. While supporting Azerbaijan`s fair stance, they pledged to comply with this principle."
Mammadov emphasized that talk regarding the alleged worsening of Baku-Ankara ties had caused confusion in Turkey proper.
"They do not comprehend where this talk comes from either. I think the Turkish leaders cannot disregard the prospect of future relations with a fraternal country," Mammadov added.
