Italy keen on brokering S Caucasus conflicts
Italy wants to play a more active role in the
settlement of South Caucasus conflicts, Deputy Speaker of the Milli
Majlis (parliament), Bahar Muradova, has said while commenting on
Rome`s suggestion to host a meeting between Azerbaijani and
Armenian lawmakers.
Muradova, who heads the Azerbaijani delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, said Italian MPs have suggested hosting a trilateral meeting on the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict. "This should be seen as Italy`s contribution to conflict settlement as a member of both the OSCE PA and the [mediating] OSCE Minsk Group," Muradova said, and added that this suggestion is also intended to support the new European security architecture.
According to the vice-speaker, other members of the Minsk Group should also step up their activity. She said the efforts of only Russia and Turkey towards conflict resolution were considerable, so far, while other countries acted as observers.
The OSCE Minsk Group was established in a Helsinki meeting of the OSCE Council of Ministers on March 24, 1992. Members of the group include Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia, US, France, Poland, Germany, Turkey, Belarus, Finland and Sweden.
